Tiger Sharks Eat Birds

During the months of June and July, the two separate worlds of bird and fish dramatically come together at French Frigate Shoals, in the NW Hawaiian Islands. In a reversal of what is usually "bird eats fish", hungry Tiger Sharks prowl the waters around the Shoal's small islands looking for albatross chicks paused in the shallow waters as they learn to fly.

Two species of albatross nest on the small isolated islands around French Frigate Shoals, Laysan and Black Footed albatross. The Tiger Sharks show up every year right on cue, when the fledgling chicks make their first solo flight. Stretching and flapping their wings on shore, these unfledged would be flyers have no idea what awaits them if they waver in their journey seaward. This annual predation has probably been going on for thousands of years.

Aloha, Surfer Dude

Welcome To Hawaii

Tiger Sharks Eat Surfers Too

Interviews with and photographs of several Tiger Shark attack victims, as well as a Tiger Shark biologist, and a fisherman who caught a Tiger Shark that killed his friend on Oahu's North Shore. This is the Hawaiian experience the Chamber of Commerce won't be telling you about.

In Hawaii, Tiger Sharks give "soul surfing" a whole new meaning. Instead of becoming totally involved with the wave and forgetting the outside world, you gotta be a little worried about what might be swimming underneath you.

For a few lucky surfers, like the two women above, the Tiger Sharks they met only left their calling card in the surfboard's fiberglass and foam, just a toothy way to say HELLO, I'M HERE. For others like the young man below, who was surfing a break on Oahu's North Shore, the state of Nirvana he once found in surfing, sort of disappeared when he got to the beach and looked at his mangled feet.
